U-Factor Ratings Replacement Windows Atlanta

The rate of heat loss is indicated in terms of the U-factor (U-value) of a window assembly. The lower the U-factor, the greater a window’s resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating properties.

The nationally recognized rating method by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is for the whole window, including glazing, frame and spacers. Center-of-glass U-factor is also sometimes referenced, and describes the performance of the glazing alone without the effects of the frame. For most energy efficient windows, the whole window U-factor is higher than the center-of-glass U-factor.

High-performance double-pane windows can have U-factors of 0.30 or lower, while some triple-pane windows can achieve U-factors as low as 0.15.

Low U-factors are most important in heating dominated climates, although they are also beneficial in cooling dominated climates. ENERGY STAR provides recommended U-factors for your climate; additionally, the Window Selection Tool compares average simulated energy costs for your location based on various window types.

What is the difference between U-factor and R-value?
While the U-factor is used to express the insulation value of windows, R-value is used for insulation in most other parts of the building envelope (walls, floors, roofs). To compare R-value and U-factor, divide 1 by the U-factor number, E.g.: a 0.25 U-factor equals a 1/0.25 = 4 R-value.

Energy Efficient Products – Simonton Windows Atlanta

Simonton Windows Atlanta

Most Simonton windows and doors feature unique spacer systems. Made of highly thermally prohibitive materials, these are placed between the glass panes and further reduce temperature transfer.

Intercept® Spacer System

• Unique U-channel design minimizes conduction for increased efficiency and comfort.

• Durable long-lasting design.

• U-shaped design flexes and contracts, reducing seal failure in the insulating glass unit.

Super Spacer® System

• Solid silicone foam provides superior energy efficiency.

• Does not conduct energy as quickly as metal spacers.

• Silicone foam is flexible and helps reduce stress cracks.

Benefits of Vinyl Windows

Atlanta Vinyl Replacement Windows

The Benefits

VinylVinyl
Plastics are relative newcomers as window frame materials in North America. Vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is a very versatile plastic with good insulating value. Vinyl window frames do not require painting and have good moisture resistance. Because the color goes all the way through, there is no finish coat that can be damaged or deteriorate over time — the surface is therefore maintenance-free.

Some vinyl window manufacturers are now offering surface treatments like laminates (wood veneer, paintable/stainable, maintenance free) and coatings. These products increase color selection and surface appearance options.

Recent advances have improved dimensional stability and resistance to degradation from sunlight and temperature extremes.

In terms of thermal performance, vinyl frames are comparable with wood, while there are minor differences, depending on the frame construction. Small hollow chambers work together to increase insulation (air chambers) and increase strength.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)

Evergreen Exteriors is always looking for the best energy efficient windows for your home. Some of the best performing double pane replacement windows will have SHGC ratings of below 0.30 and in some cases, as low as 0.18!

Call us now for a free on-site estimate for the best windows available for your home.

See below for a more technical description of SHGC.

The SHGC is the fraction of incident solar radiation admitted through a window, both directly transmitted and absorbed and subsequently released inward. SHGC is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. The lower a window’s solar heat gain coefficient, the less solar heat it transmits.

The nationally recognized rating method by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is for the whole window, including the effects of the frame. Alternately, the center-of-glass SHGC is sometimes referenced, which describes the effect of the glazing alone. Whole window SHGC is lower than glass-only SHGC, and is generally below 0.8.

Solar heat gain can provide free heat in the winter but can also lead to overheating in the summer. How to best balance solar heat gain with an appropriate SHGC depends upon the climate, orientation, shading conditions and other factors. ENERGY STAR provides simplified guidance on recommended SHGC values for your climate; additionally, the Window Selection Tool compares average simulated energy costs for your location based on various window types.
